Your Guide To Beachcombing on Estero Island

Beachcombing is for everyone – no matter how old or young you are, discovering what makes up the beach ecosystem is fascinating and strangely relaxing! But, there are certain guidelines you should follow to ensure you don’t cause environmental harm. Here are a few secrets for a successful and respectful beachcombing excursion on our private beach here at Fort Myers Beach Hotel:

The Wrack

The “wrack” is the best area of the beach to find critters, shells, beach glass and other treasures. It’s the area just above the high tide line, which is usually marked by a row of seaweed and debris. Between this line and the water’s edge is where you’ll be most successful.

Every Day Is Different

Spend a few minutes (or hours!) each day you’re on the beach because no two days are the same! Weather patterns bring a variety of different shells, seaweeds, sponges, sea glass and sea beans to the wrack.

Be Careful What You Take

Be sure to check inside your shells for living creatures – you’ll want to put those back. This includes Sand Dollars, which are living organisms, and coral; you can distinguish live coral from dead coral by its color (dead coral is white and okay to remove).  Sponges are often found in the wrack, but don’t try to take it home. They are actually made up of the skeletons of tiny marine animals and they are quite stinky once taken off the beach!

Sift Through The Grasses And Seaweeds

There are tons of tiny animals living in and among the huge variety of seaweeds and sea grasses in the wrack. These guys make a great meal for sea birds and crabs, so keep an eye out for snapping claws!

Now that you have all this great info on beachcombing, it’s time to book your stay with us and get out there!
