Fort Myers & Sanibel: Three Dates for your Diary

  • April 30, 2016

From ‘catch, care and release’ fishing tournaments to ‘shellebrating’ National Seashell Day and sampling the region’s delicious mangos, there are plenty of events lined-up in Fort Myers and Sanibel this spring and summer. Here are three of our favourites…

1.“Ding” Darling & Doc Ford’s Tarpon Tourney, Sanibel Island, May 11

To celebrate the history of the first documented tarpon caught on a rod-and-reel in “Ding” Darling’s Tarpon Bay in 1885, Doc Ford’s and the “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge have partnered to host this 7th annual “catch, care, and release” tournament. Registration is $500 per team of four, 100 percent of which goes back to the anglers in cash awards. Proceeds support the wildlife and conservation efforts at the refuge.

2. 3rd National Seashell Day, June 21

Shelling is such a popular pastime at The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel that the region has its very own special shell day. The third annual National Seashell Day will take place on June 21 and shelling enthusiasts now have a reason to ‘shellebrate’ the joy of shelling and pair it with the perfect summer getaway.

3. 22nd Annual MangoMania Tropical Fruit Festival, Pine Island, July 14-15

The humble mango is the star attraction for two days each summer on Pine Island. Go wild for fruit as you sample locally-grown delicacies at this annual affair, an unusual celebration of all the tropical fruit grown on the island, which includes lychee, carambola, papaya, and chocolate pudding fruit. In fruity foods and beverages, the event features live music, art and craft vendors, food and recipe contests, activities for kids and a chance to meet the Mango Queen.

Book yourself a well-deserved getaway at the beachfront Best Western PLUS Beach Resort Hotel this spring or summer. When you’re not busy dining on mango, fishing or shelling, you can enjoy uninterrupted views of the Gulf of Mexico from your private balcony.
