Float For Life: Releasing Your Inner Jacques Cousteau In Ft. Myers

The red beanie cap, the yellow submarine, scientific and explorative breakthroughs and a long, long list of films: Yes, we are talking about Jacques Cousteau, the French ocean explorer and one of the world’s first oceanic custodians who changed the way the world views the oceans and all of its secrets.

Why are we talking about the late, great Jacques Cousteau? Well, besides being one of the most interesting people on the planet, his work is near and dear to the people of Florida, a state surrounded by beautiful ocean waters. For that reason, Fort Myers Beach is hosting the Second Annual Float For Life event to raise awareness for ocean and marine life, with special guest speaker Alexandra Cousteau, granddaughter of Jacques Cousteau.

Taking place on the beach in front of the Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marine just a few minutes walk from our hotel, you can partake in an abbreviated Ocean Float Experience: Groups of three will take to the water, taking turns helping each other float for 10 minutes each, in order to connect with the ocean, the environment, and themselves. Events begin at 8:30 a.m., and Alexandra Cousteau will speak at 11:30 a.m. Anyone 10 years and older can participate in the water, for a fee of $20. All proceeds going to the Sanibel Sea School, a non-profit agency dedicated to connecting people to the water in an effort to improve our ocean’s health.

The Sanibel Sea School also has a very helpful tip when ocean swimming in Ft. Myers Beach between April and October: It’s called the Stingray Shuffle! Since summer is stingray season in the Gulf of Mexico, swimmers are at risk for painful stings - you can avoid this unfortunate occurrence by shuffling your feet along the ocean floor instead of stepping down into the sand. The idea is to disturb the sand around the stingray, so it can move on without delivering its painful blow in self defense. Great tip!

Explore our beach and connect with the ocean, during this event or in your own way - book your stay at the Best Western Beach Resort Hotel here in Ft. Myers and enjoy everything this sunny spot has to offer!
