Be Sun-Safe! Top Tips for Fort Myers Sun Bathers

  • July 31, 2016

sun hats, sun safety, be sun smart

We are well into our hot summer season in Florida, and visitors are often surprised by the powerful sun! By all means, head out to our private beach or any other local sand spot for a fantastic day under the sun, but make sure you don’t pay for it later, whether it be a nasty, painful burn by the next day or skin-related health problems further down the road. To help keep you safe during your stay with us at Best Western Beach Resort Hotel, here are some hot tips by leading experts at the Florida Society of Dermatology & Dermatologic Surgery:

Because the sun’s rays are at their strongest and most harmful between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., you’ll want to set up your beach towel under an umbrella or shade of a palm tree whenever possible. If your shadow appears shorter than you are, it’s best to seek shade.

Pick a sunblock with both UVA and UBA protection, often labeled as “broad spectrum” on the bottle. Also, go for something waterproof with a SPF of 30. If you have a baby, choose a sunscreen with zinc and or titanium dioxide in the ingredient list for maximum infant protection. Toss out sunscreen that has passed its expiry date – yes, they have expiry dates! – or if it is more than two years old. Remember to reapply your sunscreen often, especially after being the water or heavy sweating; every three hours for longer sun exposure times such as a day at the beach is best.

Every type of skin is susceptible to harmful sun effects – naturally darker skin tones may not appear to burn as easily as lighter tones, but burns still happen and damage is still done.

Wear sunglasses with UVA and UBA protection, or advertise UV absorption up to 400 nm. If it makes sense (like you’re not doing crazy water sports or something), keep your sunglasses on while swimming or playing in the water to reduce harmful reflections. It’s a great idea to find an awesome beach hat to rock while on the sand as well.
