Gulf Shores: 3 Delicious Surprises

  • August 15, 2017

Forget those fancy Paris bistros and London’s snooty eateries. When it comes to cuisine that really packs a flavor punch, look no further than Alabama’s Gulf Coast.

The destination is a magnet for foodies who flock to the area to sample the smorgasbord of delectable options on offer, from traditionally rustic Alabama fare in beachside dives, to mouth-watering Mediterranean, Italian, California-style Mexican, Asian, Cajun or French dishes. Heck, some of the local restaurants will even cook your catch.

Here are just three of the culinary treats that are sure to surprise you in Gulf Shores…

1. A Right Royal Feast
The Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area is fortunate enough to serve Royal Red shrimp. Found about a 1,000 feet below the gulf waters, this cold-water shrimp is a real delicacy. With its deep red color and sweet, delicate texture, royal reds can be found in all manner of dishes at coastal restaurants. King Neptune’s in Gulf Shores is a great place to try out some red shrimp.

2. Dives to Die For
Looking for ridiculously tasty fresh seafood dishes or the juiciest of burgers? Classic beach dives dot the region’s 32 miles of sugar-white sands, tempting visitors and locals alike with a truly atmospheric feast. Check out the Original Oyster House in Gulf Shores – it’s already been featured on the Travel Channel’s Man vs Food Nation. You’ll definitely want to order yourself a peanut butter pie while you’re there.

3. Caviar in Paradise
L.A. Caviar is neither from Los Angeles or made of caviar. L.A. (Lower Alabama) Caviar is the speciality of the house at LuLu’s in Gulf Shores. This famous black-eyed-pea salsa is the stuff of local legend and it only costs $5! Order it along with some crab claws, a ‘mountain of fresh ochre’ and a blackened shrimp quesadilla. This is a fun place to dine and the restaurant itself boasts its own beach for the kids and a three-story climbing rope course. Oh yes, and did we mention that Lulu’s is owned by Jimmy Buffett’s sister, Lucy?

Soak up some real flavor this summer by booking a stay at the beachfront Best Western on the Beach. When you’re not busy sampling the incredible local cuisine, you can enjoy uninterrupted views of the Gulf of Mexico from your private balcony.
